As most of us know, coming soon to both Disneyland and Walt Disney World is the much-anticipated Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. This is going to be a completely immersive experience unlike any that Disney has done before. The land is going to open this summer (2019) in Disneyland with Walt Disney World following in the fall. Today D23 released new and exciting information on Galaxy’s Edge. You can read the entire article here, but I want to focus on the bigger picture. See below for the key takeaways from the announcements and my opinions of course!
First I would like to discuss the fact that Galaxy’s Edge is going to take up 14 acres of land in both parks. That is a serious amount of space! You will be taken to the planet Batuu with characters and creatures from the movie. Throughout the land you will be able to find familiar characters such as Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, BB-8, and Chewbacca. This sounds pretty awesome to me.
Another exciting element of the parks is the rides. There will be two new thrill rides added to the parks. The first ride is called “Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run” which will actually allow you to drive the Millennium Falcon! The second ride is called “Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance” and according to D23 is one of the most advanced and immersive experience Disney has ever created. If these rides are anywhere near the level of Flight of Passage in Pandora, and I am positive they will be, I cannot wait to see them. It is absolutely amazing to see what Disney is able to create with technology these days.
The topic most near and dear to my heart is food and drink. Galaxy’s Edge is going to have a few great food and drink options throughout the land. Let’s start by talking about Oga’s Cantina (because oh my gosh you guys it looks amazing!!!) this is a themed bar that invites guests to come and share stories about their journey around the Star Wars universe. They have a ton of awesome, photo worthy, exotic drinks both with and without alcohol. For food you can head over to Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo. This will be a fast-casual restaurant with a ton of unique food and drink options. There will even be a milk stand where you can get blue or green milk, which is found in the movies.
After you finish eating and drinking around the galaxy, what better way to digest than go shopping? And boy does Galaxy’s Edge have a lot of shopping options! There will be the following list of stores to choose from (or buy something from them all!) – Droid Depot where you can customize your own droid, Savi’s Workshop where you can create your own lightsaber, Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities where you can find “mysterious and rare items” from different eras of the Star Wars galaxy, Creature Stall where you can find beasts from the Star Wars galaxy, and Resistance Supply a resource location where you can find accessories to make you feel like you are part of the resistance. Wow! That is a lot of shopping options. I can already hear my wallet crying. It seems like there will be a ton of unique offerings that you wouldn’t find anywhere else which is always a plus.
This is also the first land in Disney that was designed to integrate with the Play Disney Parks mobile app. It will give guests the opportunity to engage with the land on their phone while they explore. This sounds like an amazing addition to an already overwhelmingly immersive and thrilling land.
These are my big takeaways and opinions on the D23 announcements. Again, for more detail head here to check out the full D23 article. Personally, as someone who is not a big Star Wars fan, I think this looks just out of this world phenomenal. I cannot wait to see what Disney has done with this land. I do think I will have to wait until the hype dies down a bit though. The crowds and wait times are going to be like nothing we have ever seen before I am sure of it. But hey, maybe it will lower crowds everywhere else? What are your thoughts on Galaxy’s Edge? Let me know in the comments!
